The application gap

Directories tell you what is open. They rarely settle whether it fits.

CostsHousing may be included while travel, food, materials and lost income remain unclear.

FitApplicants still need to interpret place-specific research, exchange and portfolio expectations.

TrustAdvice is difficult to judge without the exact programme, role, year, source and conflict state.

One narrow, compounding loop

1

Check the official call

Current status, source, funding gaps and last-checked date stay visible on every residency.

2

Ask one decision

Your question is matched to the programme—not sent as an unlimited private message to one alumnus.

3

Publish the useful answer

Accepted answers, organiser clarifications and corrections remain public for the next applicant.

How specific should the proposal be to Kinosaki?

A strong structure would separate what remains true anywhere from what Kinosaki changes. Name the facility, working conditions or local relationship that alters your method, then explain what you can return to the local context. Avoid decorative references. The location should change the research question, process or exchange—not only the scenery.

What counts as a realistic community-sharing plan?

Treat the sharing format as a testable proposal, not a guaranteed audience outcome. State who it could serve, the smallest useful format, what support you would need and how it relates to the work. A studio conversation or open process can be more credible than an oversized workshop if the call permits it.

How should I decide whether a self-funded residency is financially realistic?

Build the decision from uncovered costs, not the headline benefit. Ask the organiser to confirm accommodation charges, minimum stay, studio access and any required public activity. Then price return travel, insurance, food, local transport, materials and lost income. Apply only if the programme-specific benefit still justifies that full amount.
